 Biographie de Roman Vishniac

Roman Vishniac voit le jour en 1897 à Pavlovsk, près de Saint-Pétersbourg. De 1914 à 1920 il entreprend des études de biologie et de médecine à Moscou. Il passe une Thèse de zoologie et de médecine. En 1920 il s’exile en Lituanie, puis à Berlin. De 1921 à 1931 Il poursuit ses travaux scientifiques. Malheureusement son doctorat est refusé en raison de sa religion. De 1935 à 1939 il filme et photographie la vie des juifs des ghettos. Sur 16 000 négatifs, seuls 2 000 seront préservés. Il passera onze séjours en prison sans jugement. En 1939 Roman Vishniac séjourne trois mois dans le camp d’internement d’Annot dans les Basse-Alpes. En 1940 il prend la décision d’émigrer aux Etats-Unis. De 1941 à 1950 il devient portraitiste et pratique en parallèle des expériences en microphotographie. En 1946 il obtient la citoyenneté américaine. En 1961 Il suit une mission de recherche à l’institut de médecine Albert-Einstein et devient professeur de biologie à la Yeshiva University. De 1960 à 1971 il réside et travaille à New York. Il meurt le 22 janvier 1990.
